I was working for several insurance companies in Canada building data & AI solutions for 6 years. Most recently at a company called SHIFT Technology, they make fraud detection models for insurance companies. I wasn’t happy with my career, and I desperately wanted a new job.
The job market in Canada and the U.S.A. is extremely competitive in the technology sector.
I had a perfect resume: 4.0 GPA at a top Canadian university, 6 years of corporate experience in data science & AI, and AI projects saving insurance companies millions of dollars. Yet, after 500+ applications and 10 interviews, I got zero offers.
That’s when I met my girlfriend, Kyoko, in Calgary, and she changed my life. She is Japanese, and one day she came to me and told me she hated her job in Calgary and wanted to move back to Japan. I was in the exact same boat, as I hated my job too, and I had always dreamed of moving to Japan ever since I was a kid. I had admired Japanese culture, food, and anime.
So instead of applying to North American companies, I started applying in Japan. However, I still wasn’t getting any offers. That’s when I decided to stop letting others choose whether or not I was qualified and just started my own company to build custom software.
At first it was just a company of 1 person, me.
By sharing my expertise on LinkedIn, opportunities came to me in the form of freelancing projects. Freelance gigs turned into Start Analytics, a global software company.
We now have an agile team split between Tokyo and North America where we build custom applications (web & mobile) and AI models for small to medium-sized businesses.

PROFILE
I studied Actuarial Science & Data Science, which is really just a blend of statistics, AI, and business thinking. After graduating, I spent years building software and machine learning models for major U.S. insurance companies like Allstate, Geico, and State Farm.
The fraud detection and pricing models I helped build weren’t just used in North America—they were adopted by global insurers, including Tokio Marine and Mitsui Sumitomo here in Japan. That experience gave me a deep understanding of how to apply AI in real-world, high-stakes environments.
Now, I run Start Analytics, where we help businesses build custom apps and AI tools without the need for a full in-house tech team. Whether it’s a mobile app, a dashboard, or a full AI system, we focus on what moves the needle.
I also host a monthly networking event in Shibuya called “Drinks with Founders”, where business owners, freelancers, and startup folks connect over casual drinks and good ideas.
